This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics: 10/26-11/1

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Fall season for Saint Michael's College athletics is quickly winding down as the winter teams are heating up and preparing for their first week of play. Duffy field will not see its next contest until the spring, as men's and women's soccer both concluded their seasons on Wednesday against Stonehill. Volleyball will look towards their final contest next Saturday, having gone undefeated this week against Plattsburgh State and Assumption.

MEN'S SOCCER (9-5-3, 5-5-3 NE-10)

The men's soccer team concluded their season on Wednesday with a 4-0 shutout against the Skyhawks at Stonehill College. Just under 10 minutes into the first half, freshman Michael Garcia (Maricopa, Ariz./Desert Vista) notched his first collegiate goal on a breakaway to put the Purple Knights on the board. Senior Jared Berry (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) connected on a ball from Garcia six minutes later to put the team up by two. Junior Rondel Ward (Saint George, Barbados/Harrison College) tallied a third goal for the Purple Knights early in the second half, assisted by junior Ryan Gannon (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy/Central Conn.State). With a minute and a half left in his playing career at Saint Michael's, Berry found the back of the net on a free kick to earn him his sixth and final goal of the season. Senior Jason Burnett (South Burlington, Vt./Pendelton School/IMG Academy) concluded his career with seven saves for the Purple Knights.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (4-11-3, 3-9-3 NE-10)

Women's soccer played their final game on Duffy Field this Fall, sealing a 1-1 tie against the Stonehill Skyhawks. Junior Jenn Senecal (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) and freshman Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) came off the bench in the first half to quickly team up and put the Purple Knights on the board, earning Senecal her fourth goal of the season. The Skyhawks tied the game just over a minute into the second half. Sophomore Brittany Cocozza (Cranston, R.I./East Greenwich/Saint John's) recorded two saves in the first 45 minutes, before sophomore Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt./Milton) came in to finish the game with six saves.

VOLLEYBALL (8-18, 2-12 NE-10)

The Purple Knights had a very successful week in their home contests in Ross Sports Center, putting away Plattsburgh State in three sets on Tuesday and following up with another three-set victory on their "Senior Day" Friday against Assumption College.

Leading the Purple Knights towards their win on Tuesday was junior Lindsey Frazier (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) who made 15 kills in the match, setting a new record for kills in a season. Frazier notched her 299 kill on Tuesday, breaking the record of 294 that has held since 1994 by Jess Allan. Freshman Katie Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I./Prout School) earned 35 assisted in the match, while freshman Lilly Lowe (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) made 15 digs, followed by senior Kelly Garthwait (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who made 11.

On Saturday, Frazier added 10 more kills to her current record, while Lowe also contributed seven kills against the Greyhounds. Walsh was credited with 27 assists, and Garthwait and Lowe each tallied 10 digs in the match. The Purple Knights' two seniors, Kerry Hill (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Garthwait were honored before the start of their "Senior Game".
