COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Kelley Ruch '09 (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union), a standout four-year soccer player at Saint Michael's College, has been named the College's sports information intern for the 2009-10 school year.
Ruch will assist with all public and media relations facets for the College's 21 NCAA Division II intercollegiate varsity sports programs. She will work primarily with men's and women's ice hockey during the winter season, and will culminate her internship by serving as the College's primary sports information contact during the spring 2010 sports season. Ruch is expected to begin her duties with Saint Michael's on August 24, and will complete her nine-month internship in May 2010.
"I am looking forward to being able to represent Saint Michael's athletics once again in this new role," said Ruch. "I've been fortunate enough to have the student-athlete's perspective the last four years, and it will be beneficial for me to gain an administrative perspective this year."
Ruch graduated from Saint Michael's last month with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and mass communications, and a minor in marketing. While at Saint Michael's, Ruch was a four-year starter at forward and midfield for the Purple Knights' women's soccer team. She played in 69 of a possible 71 games over the last four seasons, including 65 starts, and finished her career with 40 points (17 goals, six assists). She led Saint Michael's in scoring as a freshman and sophomore, and netted a career-high seven goals and 15 points as a junior. A team captain, she also compiled seven game-winning goals in her career, helping the Purple Knights finish .500 or better each of the last two seasons.
Ruch has gained extensive experience in the sports information and journalism fields during her undergraduate studies. She completed an internship in the Saint Michael's sports information office in the fall 2008 semester, helping in the creation of several media guides, updating web content for the College's athletics website, www.smcathletics.com, and serving as the public address announcer at many Saint Michael's athletics home contests. She spent the fall 2007 semester serving as the online editor for the College's award-winning weekly publications, the Defender and the echo, writing articles, developing multimedia projects and creating photo galleries.
An active member on campus, Ruch served on the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for three years, and as a student-athlete representative on the Athletic Advisory Council for two years. For her efforts, she was named the College's George ?Doc' Jacobs Award winner in April, an award that honors the "Father" of modern-day athletics at Saint Michael's, and is presented each year to a male and female student who makes a truly outstanding contribution to the athletic program, regardless of athletic ability.
In addition, Ruch spent the spring 2008 semester studying abroad at Bond University in Queensland, Australia. She has worked many summers at the Woodstock (Vt.) Inn & Resort, where she is currently employed.
