SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Saint Michael's College basketball teams suffered losses at Bryant University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday, with the women dropping a 70-41 decision, and the men recording a 78-56 setback.
In the women's contest, the Purple Knights were outscored 15-2 to start the game, and couldn't overcome a 19-point halftime deficit. For Saint Michael's, sophomore Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) was the lone player to score in double figures, netting 10 points, eight of which came in the second half. The Purple Knights shot just 31 percent from the field in the contest, and were outrebounded, 48-30.
In the men's game, Bryant scored the game's first 10 points and never looked back. Saint Michael's was able to cut its deficit to seven points minway through the second half, but the Bulldogs shot 13-of-23 from 3-point territory to hold off the Purple Knights.
For Saint Michael's, senior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy), junior Mike Iola (West Neubyr, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and freshman Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) each recorded 13 points. Junior Chris White (Windham, N.H./Salem) tied his career-high with 12 points off the bench.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights play their final regular-season road doubleheader of the season at NE-10 rival Pace University (women at 1:30 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.).
