Rayner, Sorrentine Seek 1,000-Point Plateau On Wednesday Versus Bryant

COLCHESTER, Vt. ? A pair of Saint Michael's College basketball players could reach the 1,000-point plateau on Wednesday as the Purple Knights host Northeast-10 Conference rival Bryant University in a Valentine's Day doubleheader at the Ross Sports Center.

The evening kicks off at 5:30 p.m., as the Saint Michael's women (10-13 overall, 7-12 NE-10) look to snap a season-high five-game losing skid versus Bryant (16-8, 12-7). At 7:30 p.m., the Saint Michael's men (13-11, 10-9) also hope to end a season-worst five-game slide as the Purple Knights host Bryant (16-8, 12-7).

On the women's side, senior Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) needs 17 points to become the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. The last Purple Knight to reach the 1,000-point milestone was her twin sister, senior Dani Rayner, who accomplished the feat on Jan. 27 at home versus American International College. Jevy Rayner also looks to move up the career rebounding chart, as she climbed into 10th in program history with her 653rd career board on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University.

For the men, junior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) needs 12 points to become the 39th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Like the women, the feat was also accomplished earlier this season, by senior Brendan Mullins (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) versus Felician College on Dec. 30, 2006. However, Sorrentine would become the first junior to surpass 1,000 career points since Mark Pater '01 and Todd Roberts '01 did so during the 1999-2000 campaign.

If neither player reaches the milestone on Wednesday, both players would get another chance at home to do so, as the Purple Knights' next contest is a Senior Day doubleheader against Pace University on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center (women at 1:30 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.).

Wednesday's basketball doubleheader should be played without any interruption due to the weather, as Bryant is expected to leave for the game later today, ahead of tomorrow's anticipated snowstorm.
