Basketball To Host Bentley On Tuesday In Key NE-10 Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College basketball teams look to snap a pair of losing skids and improve their playoff positioning on Tuesday when the Purple Knights welcome longtime Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley College in a doubleheader at the Ross Sports Center.

The Saint Michael's College women (10-11, 7-10 NE-10) will open the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. versus Bentley (16-6, 11-6 NE-10), and in the nightcap, the Saint Michael's men (13-9, 10-7 NE-10) will look to knock off Bentley (21-0, 17-0 NE-10) at 7:30 p.m.

The Purple Knight women are just 2-45 all-time versus the Falcons, but both of those wins came last season, as Saint Michael's swept the season series with Bentley. The Falcons, however, won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 48-40, on Dec. 17, 2006 in Waltham. Saint Michael's, which sits ninth in the 15-team conference, has lost its last three contests, while Bentley, tied with two other teams for sixth in the league standings, also is coming off of a loss on Saturday.

The Saint Michael's men hope history repeats itself, as Saint Michael's upset undefeated Bentley last season at the Ross Sports Center. That contest, however, was played in November; this season, Bentley is ranked third in the country, and is off to its best start in program history. The Purple Knights gave the Falcons one of their biggest scares thus far earlier this season, as Bentley edged Saint Michael's, 76-72, on Dec. 17, 2006 in Waltham. Saint Michael's, tied for fifth in the league standings and just one game back of third place, has lost three in a row, its longest skid of the season.

Two Purple Knights look to move closer to the 1,000-point plateau on Tuesday. On the women's side, senior Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) is 47 points away from becoming the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 for her career, a milestone that twin sister Dani Rayner reached on Jan. 27. On the men's side, junior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) is 42 points shy of becoming the 39th 1,000-point scorer in program history, a feat accomplished earlier this season by senior Brendan Mullins (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South). Sorrentine also looks to become the first junior to hit the milestone since Mark Pater '01 and Todd Roberts '01 did so in the 1999-2000 season.
