SMC Women, Saint Anselm Men Win Basketball Doubleheader


MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team (8-8, 5-7 Northeast-10 Conference) bested Saint Anselm College, 60-54, while the Saint Michael's men (11-6, 8-4 NE-10) lost to the Hawks, 80-64, in a basketball doubleheader on Saturday at Stoutenburgh Gym.

In the women's contest, senior Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) had a game-high 15 points, 14 of which came in the first half, as the Purple Knights held on and snapped a two-game losing skid. Freshman Meg O'Shea (West Sand lake, N.Y./Averill Park) added a career-best 10 points as Saint Michael's raced out to a 41-26 halftime lead, only to see Saint Anselm cut its deficit to 57-54 with under a minute to go. Juniors Allison Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Adrienne Carpenter (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional), and sophomore Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) added eight points apiece in the win.

In the men's contest, Saint Michael's saw its four game winning streak come to an end, as the Purple Knights made just 6-of-28 3-pointers. Senior Chris Cayole (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) led the squad with 21 points, while classmate Brendan Mullins (Downers grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and sophomore Mike Iola (West Newbury, Mass.) netted 10 points apiece in the loss.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Wednesday with a home doubleheader versus Merrimack College (women at 5:30 p.m., men at 7:30 p.m.).
