Nine Purple Knights Land On NE-10 Honor Roll


COLCHESTER, Vt. - Nine Saint Michael's College student-athletes were named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll, it was announced on Monday.

In women's tennis, senior Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional), junior Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) and sophomore Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham) were honored following a 2-0 weekend. Murphy posted a pair of straight-set singles victories and two doubles wins, while Burns and Wood won both of their singles matches as well as their lone doubles match. The trio helped Saint Michael's reach the .500 mark on the season at 6-6, including a 4-2 mark in league play, with three home matches scheduled for this week.

In women's lacrosse, junior Megan Rule (Bow, N.H./Bow) and sophomores Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and Amanada Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) earned recognition. Curran scored six goals in two home games last week, including four in a 17-5 win versus Assumption College on Saturday. Rule, meanwhile, scored four times in the two contests, while Soule added two goals as Saint Michael's improved to 3-2 overall, and currently is tied for third in the NE-10 standings.

In men's lacrosse, sophomores Mike Boerma (Birchrunville, Pa./Lawrence Academy) and Gregory Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) received honors following a 2-0 week. Lazarus scored three goals in Saturday's 13-3 win at American International College, while Boerma tallied three goals and an assist in the two wins, helping Saint Michael's improve to 4-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in NE-10 play.

In men's tennis, freshman Sean Steigerwald (North Andover, Mass.) was named to the honor roll. In three matches, Steigerwald went 2-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles. He won both of his matches in Saturday's 8-1 win at AIC, and added the lone victory for Saint Michael's in Sunday's setback at Bentley. The Purple Knights are now 5-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
