This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics


COLCHESTER, Vt. - After breaking for final exams and the holidays, the winter sports teams are back in action. The women's basketball squad went 2-1, including a one-point win at the buzzer against UMass Lowell on Saturday, while the men's team fell to UMass Lowell in their first game back since the break. Both the men's and women's ice hockey teams participated in the Fourth Annual Saint Michael's College Holiday Classic, sponsored by the Windjammer Restaurant over the weekend. The women's team finished 1-1, while the men finished 0-1-1.

The women's basketball team (8-4, 5-3 NE-10), who has won five of its last six, started off the second half of their schedule with a 60-58 win at Goldey-Beacom on December 30. Junior forward Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) led the Purple Knights with 13 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Tappan Park) added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The following day the Purple Knights suffered a 61-36 loss to Holy Family. Leading the way for Saint Michael's was Keller, who finished with eight points, five rebounds, and three assists. On Saturday, Keller hit the game-winning shot as time expired to lift the Purple Knights to the 63-62 victory over UMass Lowell. Keller finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while Otey contributed with 18 points and eight rebounds.

The men's basketball team (5-5. 3-5 NE-10) fell to UMass Lowell 83-47 on Saturday. Freshman guard Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) led the Purple Knights with 15 points, to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Senior Jon Zlystra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) was the only other Purple Knight in double figures with 12 points.

Women's ice hockey (3-9, 1-7 ECAC East) took a 1-1 split over the weekend at the Saint Michael's College Holiday Classic. On Friday, the Purple Knights scored two third period goals to defeat Chatham University 2-1. Senior Shannon Murphy (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) scored the first goal, which was assisted by sophomore Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School). With eight seconds remaining in the third period, junior Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) netted the game-winning goal. Sophomore Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 26 shots in the win. In Saturday's championship game, the Purple Knights fell to Colby College, 6-1. Junior Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./The Gunnery School) scored the lone goal, which came from Sweezey and senior Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt./Springfield). Goldman registered 36 saves. Sweezey and junior Alexis Regan (Canton, Mass./Canton) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The men's ice hockey team (1-6-1, 0-5 ECAC East, 1-0 NE-10) finished the weekend 0-1-1, at the Saint Michael's College Holiday Classic. On Friday, the Purple Knights suffered a 5-3 loss to Nichols College. Senior Chris Healey (Salem, N.H./N.H. Monarchs), sophomore Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts), and senior Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) each provided goals in the loss. Junior Dave Vorozilchak (Clark Summitt, Pa./CD Selects) handed out two helpers, while Healey, Mero, junior Zach Gieszler (Fairbanks, Alaska/University of Alaska-Fairbanks.), and sophomore Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) had an assist each. Senior Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British Columbia/Finlandia University) set aside 37 shots. On Saturday, the Purple Knights tied Fitchburg State College 4-4. Mero recorded a goal and two assists, Gieszler added a goal and an assist, and junior Pat McGuirk (Hingham, Mass./Avon Old Farms), and sophomore Fran Briand (South Burlington, Vt./Loomis Chafee School) tallied a goal apiece. Healey, freshman Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School), senior Matt Whitney (Plymouth, Conn./The Gunnery School), freshman Trevor Pawliczka (Montreal Quebec/Tabor Academy), and junior Tim Geverd (Philadelphia, Pa./University of Vermont) recorded an assist each. Bilton recorded 25 saves in net, and sophomore Brian McWade (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) stopped three shots, coming in for Bilton with 10:53 left in the period. Healey was named to the All-Tournament Team for Saint Michael's.
