This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics


COLCHESTER, Vt. - The men's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the season last week over Assumption College. On the same day, the men's basketball team also defeated Assumption College, while the women's team fell to the Greyhounds. Yesterday, both the men's and women's basketball teams fell to conference new-comer the University of New Haven. Both the women's ice hockey team and the swimming and diving team were off last week, with both returning to action this week.

The men's ice hockey team (1-2, 0-2 ECAC East, 1-0 NE-10) picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday, 5-2 over Assumption College. Leading the way for Purple Knights was senior captain Chris Healey (Salem, N.H./N.H. Monarchs - EJHL) who scored two goals and assisted on another. Senior assistant captain Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) scored a goal and had two assists, junior Alex Higgins (Phoenix, Ariz./Kent School) added a goal and assist, and junior Tim Geverd (Philadelphia, Pa./University of Vermont) scored a goal, his first as a Purple Knight. Junior assistant captain Dave Vorozilchak (Clark Summits, Pa./CD Selects - EJHL) handed out three helpers, while freshman Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints - MJHL), senior assistant captain John Burns (Sandwich, Mass./University of Connecticut), and junior Pat McGurik (Hingham, Mass./Avon Old Farms) all had an assist each. Senior Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British Columbia/Finlandia University) set aside 26-of-28 shots in the win.

The men's basketball team (4-2, 2-2 NE-10) started out the week on Tuesday with a 56-52 win over Assumption College, holding the Greyhounds to 39 points below their season scoring average. Leading the way for Saint Michael's was freshman point guard Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) who scored a game-high 19 points, all coming in the second half. Fellow freshman Qua'ron Pinckney (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Benedict's Prep (N.J.)) scored 11 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Senior Jon Zlystra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) added nine points and four rebounds, while freshman Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) scored six and grabbed a team-high nine boards. In yesterday's 62-52 loss at the University of New Haven, Berthiaume paced Saint Michael's with 15 points. Sophomore Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) scored 14 points, while Schilling grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points.

The women's basketball team (2-3, 1-3 NE-10) fell to Assumption College on Tuesday by the score of 69-61. Junior guard Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) lead the way for the Purple Knights with 15 points. Senior Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) scored 14 points with six rebounds, and sophomore Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) added 12 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. In yesterday's 67-55 loss to the University of New Haven, junior Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) scored a game-high 19 points and had five rebounds. Pintka added 12 points, while Florent netted 10 and hauled down five rebounds.
