COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Courtney Wakem (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) of the Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (4-1, 2-0 NE-10) nabbed the Northeast-10 Conference ‘Goalkeeper of the Week' for her stellar play in a pair of conference victories over Assumption and American International. Five other spring sport student-athletes were also named to the NE-10 honor roll.
Helping Saint Michael's jump out to a perfect 2-0 start in conference play this week, Wakem made 11 saves and allowed just nine goals in a pair of wins. In an 18-3 rout of Assumption, she stopped five shots, all in the first half. Later in the week, Wakem and the Purple Knights won their third straight over American International, 24-6, in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Wakem's classmates, Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and Lila McCormick (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) also found a spot on the weekly honor roll with14 and 10 points on the week, respectively. Against American International, Curran came up one goal and one point shy of her career mark with seven goals and nine points on the afternoon. McCormick recorded all of her points on assists, including a career-high six assists against AIC.
On the men's side of the lacrosse net, seniors Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Reg.) and Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) were noted for their accomplishments in a 15-1 win over Franklin Pierce and 8-5 loss to No. 7 Bryant University. Hannon stopped 12 shots against Bryant and allowed only one goal against Franklin Pierce. Lazarus led the Purple Knights offensive charge with five goals, including four-all in the first half-against Franklin Pierce.
On the diamond, junior ace Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) earned softball weekly honors for pitching a complete game against Bentley, while allowing zero earned runs. In the 6-2 loss, she also batted 2-for-4 and batted one run in.
