Senior Monahan closes out career on winning note
COLCHESTER, Vt.- In the opening weekend of the 2008 men's lacrosse season, the 10th-ranked Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) suffered a heart-breaking loss to third-ranked New York Institute of Technology, 11-10. In spite of the loss, three athletes were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly honor roll for their performance while senior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.) was honored for his 27-point effort to end his illustrious career at Saint Michael's College.
Leading the men's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon against the Bears was senior Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass.), who tallied six points on the afternoon with three goals and three assists. Also being recognized for his offensive prowess was junior Bryan Zaremba (Manhasset, N.Y./) netted four goals, including the game-tying goal with 4:11 left in regulation. Senior goalkeeper Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass.), entering the year with a 24-18 record, was also recognized for turning aside 16 shots (12 in the second half) in the season-opening loss.

The senior Monahan, playing in his final collegiate game for Saint Michael's (8-18, 6-16 NE-10), was honored for scoring 27 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in a season-finale win over Southern New Hampshire. Monahan ends his career as the 13th all-time leader in scoring with 1,451 points and moves up to sixth with 871 rebounds.
