COLCHESTER, Vt.- For the second straight week, the men's basketball team boasts the Northeast-10 ?Player of the Week'. Senior co-captain James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) earned the honors for averaging 26.5 points and 5 assists in two Northeast-10 Conference wins over UMass Lowell and Pace University. This comes a week after classmate and co-captain Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) earned the award through two non-conference wins. In the meantime, athletes from the women's basketball team and men's ice hockey team earned honorable mention.
While Sorrentine overtook ?Player of the Week' honors from Monahan, the 6-6 forward managed a spot on the honor roll for averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in the two wins. In the 72-64 win over UMass Lowell, Monahan also notched his 1,000th career point, which he will be honored for before the Merrimack game on Wednesday, November 28 at 7:30.
On the week, Sorrentine also canned 10-22 three-pointers, including eight versus Pace University on Sunday. He needs just 23 three-pointers to surpass the school record of 301 set by Todd Roberts '01. In the process of scoring 25 versus UMass Lowell, Sorrentine also matched a school record for free throw percentage in a game (1.000)-with a minimum of 10 attempts-connecting on 11-11 from the stripe.
On the women's side, sophomore forward Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Southborough) averaged 10.3 points and eight rebounds leading the team to a 2-0 conference record with wins over UMass Lowell, 65-63 (ot), and Pace, 71-61. The women remained perfect in conference play (2-0) and return to action against Merrimack on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
In Men's Hockey, senior forward Erik Caron (Kanata, Ontario) scored a goal and added two assists in a 4-2 win over Assumption to earn the weekly honors. The win marked not only the first win on the year but also the first win in the Chris Davidson coaching era. The men return to action at home versus Amherst on Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m.
