Seven athletes named to weekly Northeast-10 honor roll
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.) was named the men's basketball NE-10 ‘Player of the Week' and Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) was named the women's basketball ‘Freshman of the Week' in the conference, it was announced on Tuesday. Seven other athletes, including five from swimming and diving landed on the weekly honor roll.
Men's Basketball
In the opening weekend of the basketball season, Monahan led Saint Michael's to victories over Mercy College and Dowling College in convincing fashion with two double-digit victories in the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic. The senior co-captain averaged a tournament-high 25.5 points per game, 17 rebounds per game and was also named ‘Most Outstanding Player'. Teammate and senior co-captain James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Acad.) was also named to the weekly honor roll for draining 9-19 threes while averaging 18 points per game, including 25 in a 90-71 win over Dowling.
Women's Basketball
On the women's side, Pintka led the Purple Knights to a pair of wins over Saint Thomas Aquinas College and Mercy College. In her collegiate debut, she dropped 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked four shots, leading Saint Michael's to a decisive 79-61 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas. Pintka also chipped in nine points and four boards in a 78-58 rout of Mercy. Teammate, junior Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) was also voted to the honor roll for averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two wins, including 19 points and 8 rebounds versus Mercy.
Swimming & Diving
For swimming and diving, five athletes were named to the weekly honor roll for their efforts in a dual meet with Norwich University.
In a 185-68 win for the women, sophomore Lindsey Burgess (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) led the team with two first place finishes in the 50-yard Butterfly (2:11.27) and 100-yard Freestyle (59.50). Teammate, sophomore Mary Beth Casey (Sturbridge, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) earned the honor for her two first-place finishes in the 1,000-yard Freestyle (11:59.81) and 500-yard Freestyle (5:50.50) and third place finish in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 28.07.
The men on the honor roll included senior Ed Fennessey (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), who placed first and second in two 1-meter diving events, and swimmers Mike Kaas (West Have, Conn./Notre Dame Acad.) and Gene Taylor (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City). The senior, Kaas, tallied three second-place finishes in the 1,000-yard Freestyle (10:59.32), 100-yard Backstroke (1:00.19) and 200-yard Individual Medley (2:13.89) to earn recognition. The freshman, Taylor, captured two first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.21) and 100-yard Backstroke (1:07.97) while finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.56. The men fell to Norwich 160-93.
