COLCHESTER, Vt. ? In the final week of the regular season, junior goalkeeper Jordan Smalling (Essex Jct., Vt./Essex) earned Northeast-10 Conference field hockey ?Goalkeeper of the Week' for registering two shutouts on the week and catapulting Saint Michael's into the playoffs clinching the fifth seed. Smalling's teammate Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) was added to the honor roll along with Kelley Ruch (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) from the women's soccer team.
Needing wins down the stretch, the field hockey team was led by Smalling who earned two 1-0 wins over Bentley and Bryant to cap a five-game win streak to end the season. Saint Michael's offense was led by junior forward Slaven who was named to the weekly honor roll as well. Slaven scored her 19th goal of the season in the season finale over Bryant and also set a new school record in the process, supplanting Seanna Poeleart who scored 18 in 1998 and 1999. The field hockey team travels to Stonehill College on Wednesday for their quarterfinal match-up. During the season, Stonehill defeated Saint Michael's 3-2 in Colchester and 1-0 in overtime at Stonehill.
