This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics


COLCHESTER, Vt. Five spring sports teams made the trip South for spring break, with both lacrosse teams posting impressive victories.

The men's lacrosse team (2-2, 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference) opened up league play with a 10-6 victory at Saint Anselm College on Saturday, and in the process maintained possession of the Saints Cup, awarded annually to the SMC-Saint Anselm men's lacrosse winner. Sophomore Mike Boerma (Birchrunville, Pa./Lawrence Academy) had a game-high three goals and two assists for the Purple Knights, while senior Brandon Kobelt (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep) added two goals and one helper. Sophomore Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) stopped 16 shots in the win. On Wednesday, the then-10th ranked Purple Knights lost at fourth-ranked Adelphi University, 13-3. Sophomore Gregory Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored twice for Saint Michael's, while senior Eric Libby (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) recorded two assists and Hannon turned aside 17 shots.

The women's lacrosse team (2-1) won a pair of games in West Palm Beach, Fla., as the Purple Knights bested the University of New Haven on Tuesday, 12-7, and Presbyterian College on Wednesday, 15-6. Versus New Haven, sophomore Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and freshman Ava Gottshall (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) scored three goals apiece, while senior Kristen Palazzo (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and freshman Lauren Rizzotti (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) tallied two goals each. Against Presbyterian, Palazzo and sophomore Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) tallied four goals apiece, while junior Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy), classmate Megan Rule (Bow, N.H./Bow) and Curran each scored twice.

The softball team (4-8) completed its 12-game trip to Fort Myers, Fla., going 2-4 in its final six contests. The Purple Knights won twice on Wednesday, defeating Slippery Rock University, 7-2, and Bloomfield College, 6-3. Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) struck out 14 batters in a complete game four-hitter versus Slippery Rock, and four of the final five batters against Bloomfield to earn the save. Junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) went 5-for-7 at the plate in the two wins, and 9-for-21 in the final six games. Sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) also batted over .400 (7-for-17) over the six-game stretch, while junior Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) batted .353 (6-for-17) with a home run on Thursday in a 4-3 loss to West Chester University. Saint Michael's also fell to Edinboro University on Thursday, 8-3, and to nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast University on Friday, 8-0 and 3-0.

The women's tennis team (4-6, 2-2 NE-10), picked fourth in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Thursday, went 1-3 in its final four matches in Hilton Head, S.C. The Purple Knights' victory was a 7-2 triumph over East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday, Junior Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) and sophomore Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham) teamed for a 9-7 win in No. 2 doubles, and also each notched a singles victory versus East Stroudsburg. Sophomore Liz Clemente (Latham, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) also won twice, in No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles with sophomore Megan Conway (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield). The Purple Knights dropped a 6-3 decision to Nebraska Wesleyan University on Wednesday, a 5-1 setback to Clarion University on Thursday, and a 9-0 loss to nationally-ranked California (Pa.) University on Friday.

The men's tennis team (4-5, 2-1 NE-10), picked sixth in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Thursday, went 0-3 in Hilton Head, S.C., against stiff competition. The Purple Knights' closest match was a 6-3 setback to Messiah College on Tuesday. Earning victories for Saint Michael's were freshmen John Lescure (Kennebunk, Maine/Berwick Academy) and Dmitri Repnikov (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) in second and fourth singles, respectively, and sophomores Andy Samara (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and Torr Terranova (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) in first doubles. Saint Michael's also dropped 9-0 decisions to nationally-ranked Limestone College on Wednesday and Wayne State University on Thursday.
