Jim Murdock, an athletic trainer with nearly 30 years of collegiate experience, was named the College's head athletic trainer on July 7, 2009.
Murdock will be responsible for the health care of the College's 21 NCAA Division II intercollegiate varsity sports programs. Murdock's other duties will include staffing of home and away athletic contests, supervising assistant athletic trainers and student workers, managing the athletic training budget, and ordering equipment and supplies.
"I am honored and excited about my selection as the next head athletic trainer at Saint Michael's College," said Murdock. "In my time here in the area, I have seen and heard many positive things about Saint Michael's, its programs and its student-athletes, and have been fortunate to get to know and work with some Saint Michael's athletics staff. I hope my experience, expertise, and enthusiasm will be a benefit to all, and I look forward to becoming a Purple Knight."
"Jim Murdock will be a great addition to the Saint Michael's community," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Zaf Bludevich, the College's head athletic trainer from 1975-2004. "The experience he has gained over the last three decades, plus his commitment to the student-athletes and coaches that he represents, will be a tremendous benefit to our entire institution."
Murdock joins Saint Michael's after spending the last 11 years as an athletic trainer at the University of Vermont, including five years as head athletic trainer and assistant director of the Center for Health and Wellbeing. As head athletic trainer, he worked with all 27 of UVM's NCAA Division I varsity sports programs, and was the supervisor for seven full-time staff, two part-time staff, several student athletic trainers, and three athletic medicine facilities.
Prior to his time at UVM, Murdock was the director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer and assistant athletics director at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., from 1986-98. While at Monmouth, an NCAA Division I institution and member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), he developed a drug-education course and program for student-athletes, and was co-director of I-Team, a proactive prevention program for student-athletes dealing with responsible behavior. He also taught a variety of courses related to athletic training, health and fitness, and first aid safety, served a three-year stint as the executive director of the NEC Athletic Trainers Association, and spent eight summers as an athletic trainer at the New Jersey Garden State Games.
Murdock is a 1980 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of science degree in physical education/athletic training, and earned his masters of education in sports medicine/athletic training from the University of Virginia in 1991. He also has served a six-year stint (1980-86) as an assistant athletic trainer and head baseball coach at Washington & Lee University, an NCAA Division III institution in Lexington, Va.
Murdock has earned numerous worldwide appointments for his athletic training expertise. Since 2004, Murdock has served as an athletic trainer at two Paralympic Games and two World Wheelchair Rugby events, taking him to Brazil, China, Greece and New Zealand, among other locations. A past president of the Vermont Athletic Trainers Association (VATA), Murdock has also served on the medical staff at eight Boston Marathons and three Vermont City Marathons, and has been a sports medicine volunteer for the United States Olympic Committee at competitions in San Jose, Calif., and Marquette, Mich.
Among his lengthy list of affiliations and certifications, Murdock is a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association, the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association, and VATA. He also is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength Coaches Association, and is a certified instructor in several American Red Cross disciplines.
Murdock is expected to begin his duties at Saint Michael's in August.
