Klaess is the most celebrated lineman in Purple Knight football history. In a day when the work of a lineman was seldom noticed by the media, he was the exception to the rule. His outstanding abilities at center and linebacker were often praised by area sportswriters. As a sophomore, he started at both center and linebacker, and was named All-State at both positions. After fighting through neck and shoulder injuries in his junior year, he came on strong as a senior - playing a major role in the 1950 championship season. Once again, he was named All-State at two positions, and at center was named All-Catholic, and honorable mention All-American.
