In both his time at Saint Michael's as a student, and his life in academic administration as an Edmundite, athletics were always a focal point for Fr. John. In his College days, he played both football (end/tackle) and baseball (pitcher/outfielder) for two seasons, and was also very active in intramurals (basketball, ice hockey, tennis, and softball). In a 27+ year career at Saint Michael's he served the College in the following roles: Moderator of Athletics, Director of intramural Sports, Vice President of Student Affairs, Dean of Men, Treasurer, and varsity Coach of baseball, tennis, and football. He played an integral role in the resurrection of football as a varsity sport in 1946, 14 years after it had been cut from SMC's program. From 1956 to 1964, he served as Athletic Director at Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk, New York, where he also coached track and cross-country. During his tenure at the school, he was named President of the Msgr. Martin Catholic High School Athletic Association, presiding over the 15 Catholic high schools in the Buffalo, New York Diocese.
