“Doc” Lawrence was an outstanding three-sport athlete for the High School and – briefly – College during the early days of Saint Michael’s existence.  An honors student, he graduated from the High School in 1917, and enrolled in the College as a member of the Class of 1921.  He was named captain of the football team as a freshman, and was also elected to the Athletic Association, but duty called…and he withdrew from the College to enroll in Officer Training at the University of Vermont, and enlisted in the Army during World War I.  After the War, he returned to UVM to earn his bachelor’s degree in 1921, and then his medical degree in 1924.  Doc went on to enjoy a very long and prominent medical career in Burlington, and supported his beloved Saint Michael’s in many ways. He served as the College’s attending physician and surgeon from 1940 until his retirement in 1976, and volunteered as the team physician and athletic trainer for countless athletic contests and physical exams for student-athletes.  A longtime member of the Board of Trustees, he also served on the Alumni Board for over 25 years. Doc was the first alumnus to pledge a gift to the College’s first Endowment Fund in 1925, and was also instrumental in raising funds for Cheray Science Hall in the 1940’s.
