Lou served as the head coach of the men's ice hockey team at Saint Michael's College from 1982, when the program regained varsity status, to 2007. His legacy has included over 200 wins, nine trips to the postseason and two national championships.
Coming into the 2002-03 season, Lou has collected 219 wins in 20 seasons, and has enjoyed 14 winning campaigns. He has also guided the Purple Knights to nine ECAC Playoffs, including seven straight from 1995-2002. Additionally, Lou has groomed seven players for All-America status, including Josh Ralph '00, the 1999-2000 NCAA Division II Player of the Year.
In 1995-96, the Purple Knights began a streak of four straight winning seasons with a 12-11-1 record. The following season they went 17-6-1 and 11-2-1 in league play, and Lou was named the Division III Coach of the Year by NEHWA, and the Central Division Coach of the Year by the ECAC. The following season, Lou led the Purple Knights to a 20-7 record and a 12-2 ECAC Central Division record, giving the team its first regular season division title.
The fourth straight winning season produced the first of two Division II titles, including the school's only national NCAA title in any sport. In 1998-99, the Purple Knights went 16-10-2 overall, and captured the national crown during the last NCAA-sanctioned season for Division II hockey. Three seasons later, Lou's 2001-02 squad won 11 games in their first ECAC East campaign, and won the ECAC Division II Championship.
Lou has served in other capacities at Saint Michael's besides coaching hockey, including one year as the men's lacrosse head coach. He has also served as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Resident Life since 1984.
Lou was a four-year standout at defense for Division III power Norwich University, where he started for four years. He was an All-New England selection as a senior before graduating in 1977. Lou is enshrined in Norwich's Hall of Fame as well.
