C. Douglas Cairns Recreation Arena

HISTORY
C. Douglas Cairns Recreation Arena in South Burlington opened in October 1995, with the facility expanding to include a second sheet of ice in October 2001. The Saint Michael's men's and women's ice hockey teams began playing there during the 2001-02 season after previously calling the Essex Skating Facility home.

FAST FACTS
Both rinks at Cairns Arena have NHL dimensions (85 feet by 200 feet), with four general-use locker rooms per rink and a second-story, center-ice press box at the original rink. The first rink has seating for 600 spectators, and the second has seating for 400. A cafe overlooks rink one.

Saint Michael's previously had outdoor rinks at multiple sites on campus, with the Purple Knights playing from 1912 to 1946 near Founders Hall, and between 1947 and 1965 on a plot of land currently occupied by the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel.

From Saint Michael's College: Take Route 15 West 0.7 miles to Interstate 89. Take I-89 South 1.8 miles to Exit 14E (South Burlington) and take first right onto Dorset Street. Follow Dorset Street 1.8 miles through eight lighted intersections, under a bridge, and take left at the ninth light at the top of the hill. Take first left for Cairns Arena.

From New Hampshire, Boston and points east: Take I-89 North to Exit 14E (South Burlington) and take first right onto Dorset Street. Follow Dorset Street 1.8 miles through eight lighted intersections, under a bridge, and take left at the ninth light at top of the hill. Take first left for Cairns Arena.

From Montreal and points north: Take I-89 South to Exit 14E (South Burlington) and take first right onto Dorset Street. Follow Dorset Street 1.8 miles through eight lighted intersections, under a bridge, and take left at the ninth light at top of the hill. Take first left for Cairns Arena.

From New York, New Jersey and points west: Follow Interstate 87 North to Exit 20 (Whitehall/Fort Ann). Follow Route 149 (11.7 miles) to Route 4 North (22.3 miles) into Vermont. Take Fair Haven exit and a left onto Route 22A North; follow 41.9 miles. Take left onto Route 7 North and follow 18.9 miles. Just before the I-189 exit in South Burlington, take a right onto Swift Street (Denny's Restaurant on corner); follow 1.8 miles, including straight through a four-way lighted intersection. At next lighted intersection, with Dorset Street, stay straight. Take left into Cairns Arena parking area.
