A four-year member of the SMC ski team, Irish was clearly head
and shoulders above the competition of his day. He served as
team captain as a junior and senior, and dominated the New England
Division II slalom and giant slalom circuit throughout his
career. When the Knights skied in mixed Division meets, Irish
would be placed among the Class A skiers, when Division II skiers
were placed in Class B. He was so talented and versatile that
in his senior season he not only skied his regular alpine events
(including downhill), but would also ski the 5-kilometer nordic
races and compete in the ski jumping competition! He is one
of only 13 SMC skiers to win an Eastern Division II individual
championship, and one of only two to win more than one title in the
same championship meet. Irish won the Eastern Freshman
Championship in 1963-64, the Glen Ellen FIS Downhill in 1966-67,
and led SMC to its only Eastern Division II men's team championship
in 1964-65.
