Known as a great student athlete and leader during his years at
Saint Michael's, excelling in both basketball and baseball. In
basketball, he captained the Purple Knights for three consecutive
years, leading them to the Green Mountain Conference Title and the
Vermont State Championship in his senior year. Led the team in
scoring for four straight years, and was named All-State three
times. Also named to Fr. Linnehan's "All-Saint Michael's: The First
Fifty Years" All-Star Team. In baseball, he played first base and
batted "cleanup" for the Green Mountain Conference Co-Champions of
1940 - referred to as the best baseball team in SMC history. The
Purple Knights won their first seven games of the season that year,
with Herbert leading the way with a .461 batting average. He
finished the year at .355, and was solid at first base with a .973
fielding percentage.
