Jerry was involved in all aspects of the Purple Knight athletic
program during his days on the hilltop. He participated in
baseball, football, and hockey--playing the first two as a freshman
and sophomore, and hockey as a freshman, junior, and senior.
Hockey was his strongest suit, as he was the lce Knight starting
goaltender for three seasons, including the state championship team
of 1949-50. It was in sports publicity, however, that Jerry
probably made his greatest contribution. As an undergraduate, Jerry
co- founded the College's first publicity office, served as SMC's
first sports information director (under Hall of Famer John
Donoghue '32), and was a founder and first editor- in-chief of The
Michaelman. He also wrote a weekly sports column for the Burlington
Daily News, and compiled the first SMC sports record book,
encompassing the College's first 46 years of athletics. Jerry was
the public relations director of the National Basketball Hall of
Fame, retiring in 1991.
