Like Hall of Fame member and college roommate Tony Nicodemo,
Gretkowski was a cornerstone of the SMC basketball dynasty of the
late 1950's. He was the first player in College history to score
more than 1,000 points and collect more than 1,000 rebounds in a
career, and the only player to achieve this feat in a three-year
career. He played a major role in SMC's three straight trips to the
New England Regionals, and averaged 14 points in the NCAA
National Tournament. He was a three-time All-State selection, was
named Vermont Player of the Year in 1958, and was twice named to
the All-East team. He was awarded the Roger Keleher award in 1959,
given to SMC's top scholar-athlete. At the time of induction, he
still holds two College rebounding records. Amazingly, he did not
play basketball in high school!
