A talented three-time All-State performer for the Purple Knight
basketball team, Bernie was counted on in pressure situations from
the beginning of his freshman season. After collecting 51.7 points
over his first two seasons, he was elected team captain and led the
Knights to a 17-4 record and a New England Division II Championship
in 1955-56. In his senior year, Bernie again served as captain,
racked up 398 points, and led the team to an 18-7 record and a
repeat performance as New England Champions. Bernie finished his
career with 1,139 career points, which at that time was SMC's
all-time career high. He reigned as the Knight's all-time scoring
leader for eight years, until Rich Tarrant surpassed him in 1965.
He currently ranks 12th on the all-time list. He was the 1957 Roger
Keleher Award winner as SMC's top scholar athlete.
