One of the greatest guards in SMC history, Browne made a major
impact on the SMC basketball program during his three-year
career. As a sophomore, he was a member of the infamous "Iron
Knights", National Finalists in 1958. As a junior and senior,
he led SMC to consecutive New England Championships and
quarterfinal berths in the national championship tournament.
During his brilliant career, Browne was a three-time All-East
selection, and was named All-America honorable mention in 1957-58.
He scored 40 points in his final home game to lead the
Knights to a 99-95 win over Saint Anselm in the 1958 N.E. title
game. He was named MVP of the Northeast Regional Tournament,
and was an All-Tournament selection at the NCAA's that year.
With Browne at guard, the Knights were 53-25 (68% win percentage),
collected three New England titles, and made strong NCAA
appearances--an unprecedented string of success here at Saint
Michael's.
