COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College Head Athletic Trainer Renee Breault announced two additions to the Athletic Training staff on Wednesday, as Kayla Ciampa has been hired as an athletic trainer and Parker McKinney was added as a postgraduate intern. Athletic Training heads into the 2017-18 school year with a four-person staff, which includes returning athletic trainer Abigail Keough.
A familiar face at Saint Michael's, Ciampa heads into her first year as a full-time member of the Athletic Training staff. She was an interim athletic trainer at the College for much of the 2016-17 school year and completed a clinical rotation in spring 2016 during her undergraduate studies at the University of Vermont. Ciampa succeeds Chris Jones, who is now a ski jumping coach and freelance athletic trainer in New Hampshire after spending the past three years on staff.
In the months following her graduation from UVM in May 2016, Ciampa was a certified athletic trainer at Northwestern Orthopaedics in Saint Albans. In addition to completing a stint at Saint Michael's while an undergraduate, Ciampa spent time with the Rehab Gym in Williston and finished rotations at UVM, Colchester High School and Mount Mansfield Union High School. In summer 2016, she traveled to Huancayo, Peru, with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children to help provide healthcare access to underprivileged and medically underserved families.
Ciampa earned a degree in Athletic Training education while minoring in nutrition and food science. She was a research associate in trauma physiology through the UVM Medical Center Emergency Department throughout her senior year and has gained volunteer experience at such events as the 2015 Vermont City Marathon in Burlington.
McKinney is another UVM alumnus on the Athletic Training staff, joining not only Ciampa but Keough. A 2017 graduate with a degree in Athletic Training, McKinney previously completed a clinical rotation with the Saint Michael's men's lacrosse team this past spring. He gained additional clinical experience at The EDGE Physical Therapy in South Burlington, with the UVM field hockey and track & field teams, and at Colchester High School and Essex High School. A Dean's List student in college, McKinney earned his National Ski Patrol certification in 2010, having served as a ski patroller at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Massachusetts since then.
